- The DIW Berlin Graduate Center (GC) offers a four-year programme of in-depth training in economics leading to a PhD from one of Berlin's universities.
The goal of the doctoral programme is to provide outstanding young doctoral students from all over the world with excellent training in research and policy advice. The academic research of doctoral students at GC typically focuses on applied topics in economics. Both education and research at the GC have a strong empirical component.
We offer a dual training approach. During the first year, the GC offers a high-level coursework curriculum. Subsequently, from the second to the fourth year of their studies, students are provided with on-the-job training via DIW Berlin's research projects.
The winter semester (October to March) during the first year includes courses in advanced-level mathematics, microeconomics, macroeconomics, economic policy, and advanced econometrics.
In the summer semester (April to July), doctoral students choose either microeconometrics or time series analysis. Additionally, they choose two advanced courses from a variety of fields that fit their research interests and are offered by the Berlin universities.
In order to effectively link academic research and real-life policy issues, the PhD education also includes internships at prestigious institutions outside of DIW Berlin, for example, the IMF, OECD, or the World Bank.
The GC also offers numerous activities for further education and research dissemination, such as master classes, research seminars, and reading groups.
The GC itself is not a degree-awarding body, but provides doctoral-level instruction and supervision. You will receive your doctoral degree from one of DIW's partner universities in Berlin.
